Pediatric THC Exposure Reported in Detroit Schools
THC-infused edibles packaged to closely resemble popular candy brands, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion by children.
The Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center (MiPDC) is raising awareness following a recent news report involving two Detroit elementary school students who were hospitalized after ingesting suspected THC-infused edibles.
According to the report, the children experienced symptoms consistent with cannabis exposure after consuming what appeared to be edible products. Incidents like these highlight the ongoing risks that THC-containing products pose to children—especially when they resemble familiar snacks or candy.
“Even small amounts of THC can have serious effects on children,” said Dr. Vohra. “These products are often packaged in ways that make them appealing and easily mistaken for regular treats, which increases the risk of accidental ingestion.”
The Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center urges parents, caregivers, and educators to take precautions:
Store all cannabis products safely, locked, and out of sight
Avoid using products that resemble common snack foods
Educate children about not consuming unknown items
Act quickly if exposure is suspected
If you believe a child has been exposed to THC or any potentially harmful substance, contact MiPDC immediately at 1-800-222-1222 for expert guidance.
